Super Red Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.)

The Super Red bristlenose is known for its orange colouration. A peaceful, hardy bottom-dweller and an excellent natural algae grazer, which will help keep your aquarium glass spotless. Super Reds stay much smaller than most other bristlenose types, making them ideal for most community aquariums. Adult Size: 10–13 cm. With proper care, they can live for approximately 5 to 8 years. Mostly active in the evenings and at night.

Water Conditions:
Temp. 22–28°C
pH 6.0–7.6
GH 2-15

Diet:
Bristlenose are mainly algae grazers, but they need added vegetables in their diet. Blanched baby marrow is a must.
They will also enjoy grazing on blanched cucumber, broccoli, and spinach, as well as cooked gem squash shells. In my experience, bristlenose enjoy small amounts of protein-based food. Offer these occasional treats to support balanced nutrition.
Supplement with high-quality algae wafers or bottom-feeder tablets, and a protein-based tablet on occasion. Watch out for a sunken belly or thin appearance.

Helpful Information:

  • Driftwood is essential. It aids digestion, provides natural grazing and creates hiding places, which reduce stress.
  • You can add a pleco cave to make them feel more at home.
  • I recommend a minimum tank size of about 60L for them to grow out without stunting.
  • Bristlenose benefit from well-oxygenated water and a bit of flow.
  • Keep up with weekly water changes. These fish come from areas with constant, clean, flowing water.
